What Will Become of the Blog...

I have been blogging for over 1 1/2 years now. In my opinion, it is a wonderful and creative outlet for many people. Bloggers come from all walks of life and there are many reasons why people blog.

Some individuals use it to communicate with their friends and families. A lot of times, these blogs are private. "Mommie Bloggers" write humorous anecdotes about their daily adventures with their kids. There are others who love to write short stories, poems, and novels. These bloggers will post their literary works on the internet, sometimes one chapter at a time. Photography bloggers will post beautiful photographs that they have taken. There are medical doctors and nurses who like to comment about medicine, health insurance, and things that are important to them in the field of medicine. Of course, you have political bloggers, cartoon bloggers, and "blawgers". Blawgers are lawyers who blog.

On my blogroll I have a huge variety of individuals ranging from a medical doctor in India , a recently published author, to a teenager. There are some bloggers who like to only link to those who share a common interest. And then there are those, like me, who enjoy the variety that is provided by people from all walks of life. I am also one of the fortunate bloggers who has gotten to meet a fellow blogger face to face. I know of other bloggers who have done this as well. Blogging has linked people together. People who would otherwise never have crossed each other's paths. I have developed many friendships with other bloggers. They are a caring and giving group of people.

I believe that blogging encourages many people to take an active role in society. It encourages them to look at other people in the world and to see things from another point of view. Closer to home, I feel that blogging helps people to get involved in their community and their politics. Let's face it, the polls have dismal numbers of people showing up to vote. I think that it is an important outlet which gives people a voice, and the feeling that they are being heard as well.

On my blog I like to feel that I am helping individuals. I like to help people understand things by putting the complicated into simplified terms. I also like to encourage people to gain knowledge, to research a subject, make inquires, to find answers, and to question the status quo.

While I like creative writing, I find that I really enjoy being a part of citizen journalism. I view myself as an activist as well. I don't have a lot of time to really play an active role in citizen journalism; perhaps someday I will.

Of course, one can't look at blogging through rose colored glasses. There are things about it that aren't very pretty, let alone nice. But for the most part, there are a lot of neat and creative people in this world.

I truly enjoy exercising my freedom of speech and displaying my creativity through online publishing. My creations are out there for the world to see. How could this happen any other way than through the world of blogging? And there are millions of other people like me as well. With new technology and applications that are geared towards social media, I don't believe that the blog is something that will become passe`. If nothing else, it is only going to get bigger and better.

Our Web Aura... I Mean "Presence".

At my workplace we're all about technology. We use wireless ECG's (electrocardiograms), wireless computer tablets, digital radiographs, you name it. If it works with a computer we more than likely have it and use it.

We have a "lust" for technology, so that appetite naturally spills over to the internet.

We do a lot of things on the internet at work, and of course, we have a website. Our website isn't static. In other words, it doesn't just have a "Meet Our Staff" page with a Google map on it to show you how to get to our place.

You can order most of your pet's medications, food, and heartworm preventative, as well as flea and tick control products. All of these items will be delivered to you directly from the distributor.

We also offer PayPal so that you can pay your bill online without having to go through the front desk to check out.

You can make appointments for examinations and vaccinations, boarding reservations, and schedule elective surgeries as well.

There is also a place for you to submit any comments that you may have. Whether it is a question about your pet, or maybe something you didn't like about your visit; all comments are welcome.

On our website there is a message board where you can post lost and found pets, or pets that are needing to be adopted. We also have some people post pets that they have for sale. Our message board is also open to questions, if you want to post them publicly that is.

If you're looking for a job, you submit your application online. We don't take paper applications or resumes.

There is also a photo gallery, where you can post pictures of your pets and see the pets that belong to our clients as well.

In addition to our public format, we have our Human Resources available to our employees through our website.

However this isn't open to the public.

Our website is very advanced, just like our hospital. And you won't see another veterinary website or hospital like it in the state.

You really should just stop by our website so that you can see all the neat things that are on it.

Geek Night... A Review.

Monday night's guest speaker, Burke McCrory, shared some insightful information and had a wonderful Q&A session with our class. A senior IT engineer for the Oklahoma Tax Commission, Burke proved that you can be a geek and a real person all at the same time.

What I thought was the most interesting about Burke's presentation is that he thinks in terms of the future. Most people live in the here and now; no matter what their profession is. It isn't wrong to live that way, but I have found that a lot of people don't "live" in the future. It is human nature to resist change, and change can cause a lot of problems in today's workplace. Most change is resisted. In the world of technology, however, change is inevitable. And it seems that most of us are only caught up in this whirlwind when we find that we aren't able to keep up with the rest of the world any other way.

Burke McCrory had a message to deliver to us on Monday night. He wanted to "...challenge you [us] to think about something." He encouraged us to "...consider the inadvertant impact of technology on our lives". Burke also dared us to think about unsettling things. Things such as "...some jobs will go away" and "...we are changing and eliminating jobs". While one could take these statements and make them fearfully stand alone, Burke presented all of these ideas in such a way that the possibilities were, almost, exciting.

After a quarter of a century in the IT industry, Burke McCrory was still excited about his job. He was up to date on the technology. He was ready to move on to the next greatest gadget. And he shared his enthusiasm in a language that we could understand. Not in some kind of techno foreign-like gibberish that none of us could comprehend.

Monday night's class was great and the time spent there just flew by. I learned a lot of things. One of which is to not be afraid of the future but to embrace it, and even try to actually shape it. As Burke McCrory put it, "...technology that is dreamed-up... gives us ideas for the future".
